International career

In 1982, Butcher was the youngest member of the back four that featured at the World Cup in Spain. He became a regular member of the national side at this stage and remained England’s first choice centre-back for the rest of the decade, playing in the 1986 World Cup. In that tournament he played in the match against Argentina in which Diego Maradona passed five English players before scoring, a goal sometimes described as the ‘goal of the century’.

Success stories

"I’ve been really impressed by what he has done. Without any resources he has his team playing with a great attitude and with some style. Don’t forget one Celtic player will earn as much as his whole team does."
Craig Brown
Scotland National Team Manager
"I think Inverness have been brilliant this year. For me, Terry is Manager of the Year [2012/13]. What he has done there is nothing short of miraculous."

Steve Lomas
St Johnstone Manager
"He’s taken one of the smallest clubs in the SPL to second top of the table on a tiny budget. He deserves a crack at a big club after the job he’s done there."

George Burley
St Johnstone Manager
